Why is it that when women reach a certain age, they feel that all their life experiences, knowledge and life lessons are suddenly considered null and void? In most of the world’s cultures, the oldest residents are the most respected; they are recognized as the wisest and their knowledge is valued.

The Lesson of Experience

As we grow through life, we continue to evolve.  We make mistakes along the way, learn from them and do better next time.  We understand the real world better than anyone in their 20’s or 30’s ever could.  It’s not their fault, they just haven’t experienced enough to have been taught these lessons; their time will come.

Self-Worth Beyond Your 20s (and 30s, and 40s, and 50s…)

I think women are the most susceptible to seeing themselves as “less than” because of their age.  Our self-worth is tied to our youth. The media tells us that only teenagers and women in their 20s are attractive. How ridiculous! What’s most surprising about this, is that we buy into it!

Why would anyone want to hide the beautiful person they have become after years of a life well lived? Our hearts, minds, values, knowledge and spirit are who we are, not how we look. Besides, there is nothing more beautiful than a confident, passionate, empowered woman, at any age.

Is This All There Is?

If you are a 40+ woman, you may feel like your life has shifted recently.  No longer are you content with just schlepping through your life, doing what is expected of you, what you’ve always done or, my least favorite, what you should do.  Have you found yourself asking “is this all there is?”.  I believe the reason this shift happens at this age, and not before, is that you’re not ready; you’re still in the process of becoming who you really are.  You are finally at a time in your life when you have clarity about what you really want and your unique gifts. You feel compelled to live your life on your own terms.

This is not a time to resign yourself to “more of the same” or just fade into the background and let go of your interests, dreams and passions. This is the perfect time to start living them!

There Is Still Time, But…

There is still time, but, it’s time to move! Breathe deep. Get off the couch. Start moving. Every day is a gift, open it and enjoy it. Start focusing on where you feel pulled, on what energizes you. Go and experience it. Listen to your heart and intuition, it will always steer you in the right direction.  The only rule is to stop waiting. Take action.

You have so much to give.  You were not born with curiosity, talents and gifts to hide them away or never pursue them; you were meant to experience them and share them with the world.

Most of your family and friends will celebrate with you and wonder where you’ve been hiding your true, amazing self. However, don’t be surprised if there are a few around you that become uncomfortable because something is different about you now.  It’s about time!

You need a kick in the ass?  Here it is. Stop holding yourself back. Someday never comes. Someday is now. It’s go time!

You are not too old and it is not too late.  THIS is the perfect time.  You’re ready.

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” -Hunter S. Thompson

Stop Hiding. Start Living.
